December 5, 2012 -- There are a lot of smiling faces beaming from the corner of Southwest Fifth Avenue and Oak Street in Portland. They are the faces of CareOregon members young and old, male and female, healthy and health-challenged. In photographs that cover the street-level windows of the CareOregon Building, they are a constant reminder of the people the health plan serves, both to the health plan staff and the casual passersby.

December 5, 2012-- Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-1) and Congressman Greg Walden (OR-2) introduced legislation--H.R. 6635, the TRICARE Protection Act--to protect thousands of military retirees in Oregon from sudden loss of access to primary care doctors. The Department of Defense announced in October that only TRICARE beneficiaries within a forty mile radius of a medical treatment facility would be eligible to participate in the lower cost TRICARE Prime program, raising costs for all TRICARE members outside this range.

December 4, 2012 -- An advocacy coalition of healthcare and public health organizations is seeking legislative support next session on a proposal to spend Oregon’s share of the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) funds on prevention and community based-health initiatives. The Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement, signed by Oregon and 45 other states in 1998, was designed to help states recover some of the tobacco-related healthcare costs and to prevent tobacco from taking even more lives.

December 1, 2012 -- In 2006, Tracy Oseran was driving home from work and heard a news story on the radio about a New England nonprofit called Food For Free, which delivers fresh produce to food pantries, meals-on-wheels programs and other services that deliver food to people in need.
