Plotting the Nurse's Path to the Boardroom Workshop

June 2, 2016

PORTLAND, ORE. – Nurses interested in exploring the ins-and-outs of board service can attend “Plotting the Nurse's Path to the Boardroom,” a workshop hosted by the Oregon Center for Nursing (OCN) and the Oregon Action Coalition (OAC) on Thursday, June 9thheld at the University of Portland.

This workshop, sponsored by the University of Portland, is held as a part of the Oregon "Nurses on Board" initiative, a program funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Legacy Health System, OHSU, and OHSU School of Nursing, and designed to increase the number of nursing professionals prepared to serve on boards responsible for guiding health policy in Oregon.

This initiative also fits within a larger national effort to place nurses in board positions. The Nurses on Boards Coalition aims to place 10,000 nurses on boards by 2020. Created in response to the 2010 Institute of Medicine report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, both the national and statewide initiatives aim to build healthier communities through the involvement of more nurses on boards at all levels.

“The nurse's voice is critical,” said Jana R. Bitton, OCN’s executive director and co-lead of the OAC. “Nurses represent the largest professional group in healthcare, and are the most trusted. Their perspective is crucial to making informed health policy decisions.”

Some of the main objectives of this workshop are to understand how board service is relevant to local and national nursing practice, toexplore the requirements and competencies needed for board service, and to present the opportunity for interaction with local and national nurse leaders experienced in board service.  Executive/leadership coach Kimberly McNally, MN, RN, and Kim Harper, MN, RN, executive director of the Indiana Center for Nursing and representatives from the National Nurses on Boards Coalition are the keynote speakers, and University of Portland is participating as a sponsor.
