Mosaic Medical is one of eight community health centers in Oregon to receive a Substance Abuse Service Expansion Award from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Mosaic Medical will receive $406,250 annually for two years beginning this spring. This funding will be used to expand the delivery and coordination of substance abuse services at their primary care clinics, with specific focus on treatment of opioid addiction in underserved populations.
Dr. Christine Pierson, Chief Medical Officer for Mosaic Medical, states, “Addiction to opioids is an increasing epidemic in Central Oregon and across the nation as a whole. We see this daily in our primary care clinics and have limited resources to help our patients achieve recovery, particularly in our rural communities. This grant funding will help us expand the delivery of substance abuse services, with a focus on medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and the integration of behavioral health services for opioid use disorders.”
Research shows that a whole-patient approach to treatment through a combination of medication, counseling and behavioral therapies is the most successful in treating opioid use disorders. Experience suggests that patients who are engaged in a primary care medical home may be more willing to engage in treatment when they can access it within this environment. This funding opportunity will allow Mosaic Medical to expand services to meet a critical regional need and respond to patients who may forego addiction support and treatment due to personal or logistical barriers.
