Adventist Medical Center Tops List in Quality of Care Improvement

Oregon Health Authority report on hospital safety and quality of care reveals Portland’s Adventist Medical Center tops the list for hospitals throughout Oregon
June 9, 2016

PORTLAND, Ore.—The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) released its Hospital Transformation Performance Program (HTPP) report this morning, ranking Adventist Medical Center in southeast Portland first on the list of 28 participating Oregon hospitals for its dedication to patient safety and quality of care.

Adventist Medical Center will be awarded more than $22.3 million for meeting or exceeding 10 out of 11 of the Oregon Health Authority’s hospital quality improvement metrics.

“As a healthcare leader in Portland and the Northwest, we are committed to providing safe, high-quality and high-value care to all of our patients, and to improving the health of everyone in the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area,” said Joyce Newmyer, president and CEO of Adventist Medical Center and the Pacific Northwest Region of Adventist Health. “Today’s recognition by the Oregon Health Authority reaffirms the hard work and continuous improvement we’ve made to become a leading provider of trusted medical care in our region.”

HTPP was designed by OHA’s Hospital Metrics Advisory Committee to measure 11 quality health metrics for Oregon hospitals participating in the continuous improvement program. From October 2013 to September 2015, Oregon hospitals were measured on transformation and patient safety improvements. The metrics were categorized into six domains: readmissions, medication safety, patient experience, healthcare-associated infections, behavioral health, and enhanced coordination between emergency and primary care physicians.

Following the release of the HTPP report, Andy Davidson, the president and CEO of the Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems (OAHHS), commended Adventist Health for joining with other Oregon hospitals in transforming the quality of healthcare in Oregon.

“When we work collectively in the best interest of our patients, great things happen,” says Carolyn Kozik, MSN, RN, executive director for organizational quality for Adventist Health in Portland. “This report demonstrates the success of our hard work and the steps we’ve taken to ensure our patients receive the best care available.

The Hospital Transformation Performance Program is part of Oregon’s waiver with the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Through this waiver and this program, hospitals are key to demonstrating new models and metrics that achieve better health, better care and lower costs. Ultimately, programs like these serve as a model for the nation on how to improve the quality and value of health care.
