Better Maternity Care Could Save $5 Billion Annually

New study shows unnecessary cesarean sections drive up healthcare costs for employers and government, increase health complications for mothers and newborns
January 7, 2013 – Private businesses and federal and state governments could save billions of dollars if the quality of maternity care in America were improved, based on data in The Cost of Having a Baby in the United States, a new report issued by Childbirth Connection, Catalyst for Payment Reform, and the Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform.  The report shows that the high proportion of babies delivered by cesarean section costs commercial insurance plans and state/federal Medicaid programs thousands of dollars more per birth than vaginal births and the difference in costs is growing over time.  The significant variation in costs within and across states for each type of birth indicates there are additional opportunities for savings. OHSU School of Dentistry team finds persistent oral bacterial strains, even one year after treatment for severe early childhood caries

A follow-up study shows dominant genetic strains of highly-cariogenic bacteria and several emergent strains in young patients
January 7, 2013 — In a follow-up to a study conducted one year ago, researchers at the Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry have determined that certain genetic strains of bacteria are dominant in children one year after treatment for microbial-caused plaque and tooth decay, and six new previously undetected minor strains were identified. The research team also found that certain bacterial strains in children are resistant to xylitol, a popular product used to reduce plaque and suppress bacterial growth. Read More >>
